You Can’t Win If You Don’t Play News: Powerball lottery organizers are betting that bigger jackpots will entice more people to play, but gamblers are going to have to dig deeper into their wallets to try their luck. Tickets for the multistate game are doubling in price to $2 beginning Jan 15. While the odds of winning one of the game’s giant jackpots also are improving, those in charge of the lottery are gambling that people are willing to pay more for the hope of becoming a millionaire in a down economy. Read more here.

Jesus, Please Take The Wheel News: A man carried a loaded machine gun into a Manhattan subway station Sunday night—and as if that’s not enough, he had a loaded handgun in his waistband as well. A police officer stopped the man after he went through the turnstiles without paying, then noticed he was heavily armed and arrested him. Read more here.

Here’s Something To Keep In Mind For That “Lose Weight” Resolution This Year News: You’ve heard “a minute on the lips, years on the hips,” or some variation. But did it make you put down that frosted butter cookie? No? OK, here’s another bit of research to snack on: After humans and rodents eat a high-fat diet, their brains begin to show evidence of injuries in just 24 hours. If they keep eating that yummy fatty stuff continuously, the area of their brains that regulates weight — the hypothalamus — will show evidence of serious inflammation and structural damage. Read more here.

Speaking Of Losing Weight… News: Getting in shape is the classic new year’s resolution, and GymPact is hoping to capitalize on that with a service that incentivizes users to hit the gym or open their wallet. The service is centered around a check-in app that raises the stakes by having users set up a weekly workout schedule and ante up cash: if you don’t meet your weekly goals, GymPact takes your cash and distributes it amongst users who stuck to their schedule. GOP Knives Are Out News: Presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain both were given point-blank opportunities this weekend to repudiate the words of a Dallas pastor who called Mormonism a “cult” and said that Mitt Romney is not a Christian—and both took a pass. Read more here.

Tell The Truth And Shame The Devil News: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said on Sunday that the U.S. auto industry would surely have disappeared had Republican Party presidential nominee hopeful Mitt Romney been in charge during the Obama administration’s bailout for Chrysler and General Motors in 2009. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Emanuel – Obama’s first chief of staff – said the country is now stronger after the automobile industry reversed course. Read more here.

Protecting The Mental Health Of Our Troops News: The fate of military veterans suffering mental illness is “a stain on our country”, an MP has said as he helped launch a charity campaign. Figures released by the Combat Stress charity showed more than four in five still feel shame and embarrassment at their conditions. Around a third feel so stigmatised that they cannot even tell their families and it takes on average 13 years after leaving the services for them to seek help. At a function to mark World Mental Health Day, the charity – which looks after thousands of veterans, including many psychologically scarred by action in Iraq and Afghanistan – launched the next phase of its The Enemy Within fundraising drive. Read more here.

Meanwhile….In Pakistan/Afghanistan News: Pakistani soldiers killed 30 Afghan militants who had crossed the border to attack the army, Pakistani military officials said Monday. The raid Sunday night by a group of more than 200 Afghans could further damage an already difficult relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which often accuse each other of failing to halt cross-border operations by militants. Read more here.

More Americans Are Following The Kanye West Workout Plan News: Just over one third of people in the USA are of normal weight, while 35.8% are overweight and 27.6% are obese, according to a Gallup Poll published on Friday. While in most countries these would be alarming figures, the pollsters see them as a promising sign – for the first time in three years the number of normal weight people is higher than the figure for people who are overweight (not including obese). Read more here.

It Always Falls Back On The Little Guy News: Good health is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only do you feel better, you probably paid less for health insurance than some of your co-workers. In recent years, many large employers have passed on the rising cost of health insurance in the form of higher deductibles and co-payments — costs borne primarily by those who use health care. This year, though, the pain will be shared, according to an analysis by Towers Watson, a human resources consultant. Employers will pass on cost increases primarily through higher employee premium contributions. Read more here.

I Ain’t No Joke I Use To Let The Mic Smoke. Now I Slam It When I’m Done And Make Sure It’s Broke News: President Obama held up a newly printed copy of his $447 billion American Jobs Bill today at the White House and demanded that Congress “immediately” pass it “to put people back to work.” “No games, no politics, no delays,” Obama said during a Rose Garden ceremony featuring a variety of workers he said would benefit from the legislation. “I’m sending this bill to Congress today, and they ought to pass it immediately.” Read more here.

Another Day, Another Series Of Layoffs News: Bank of America Corp. (BAC), the biggest U.S. lender by assets, will eliminate 30,000 jobs in the next few years as part of Chief Executive Officer Brian T. Moynihan’s plan to bolster profit and the company’s stock. The reductions, equal to about 10 percent of the firm’s workforce, are part of the first phase of an overhaul that aims to remove about $5 billion in annual costs by the end of 2013. Read more here.

Another Day, Another Recall News: Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, a Springdale, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products subject to recall include….Read list here.

The GOPTea Is Nuts News: Had a friend send me this article by former Republican staffer Mike Lofgren under the subject line, “Informative reading for tonight’s Republican showcase.” I’m probably late in seeing it, but Lofgren’s piece raises fascinating and terrifying questions about the future of our political https://www.glenerinpharmacy.com/buy-clomid-online/ system and the increasing possibility that we are headed toward something like a civil war, or a constitutional crisis. Lofgren, in describing the reasons for his defection from the Republican party, describes a Republican camp that increasingly acts not like a traditional peacetime political organization, but more like an apocalyptic cult or one of the authoritarian movements from early 20th century European history. Read more here.

Turn Off The Boob Tube News: SpongeBob SquarePants may be bad for kids’ brains. Preschoolers who watch fast-paced shows like Spongebob have more trouble concentrating than other children, a new study of 60 youngsters suggests. Researchers assigned 4 year olds to watch Spongebob or the slower-paced educational cartoon Caillou for nine minutes, or to draw freely with markers. Immediately after, the kids took mental function tests to see how well they solved problems, followed rules, and remembered what they were told, for example. Read more here.

Cam Newton Made All The Critics STFU News: With just one season as a starting quarterback in college, Cam Newton was supposed to be a raw product coming out of the draft, an inexperienced talent who was ill-prepared for the NFL. It might be time to reconsider that line of thinking. In the Carolina Panthers’ 28-21 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday, Newton became just the sixth rookie in NFL history to throw for more than 400 yards in a single game. Read more here.
