Saturday Open Thread: African Americans in Ballet

September 29, 2012 by Miranda 91 Comments

Happy Saturday Obots!

This week we featured talented and beautiful ballet dancers. In my research I came across information on Dance for All, a nonprofit organization in South Africa that teaches disadvantaged, poor youth the art of ballet. The photos are beautiful.

First though, the final featured dancer of the week is Aesha Ash, founder of the blog, The Black Swan Diaries.

Aesha has been a professional ballet dancer for 13 years. She Joined the New York City Ballet at the age of 18, where she remained for eight years dancing numerous soloist and principal roles. Aesha then joined the legendary Bejart Ballet, in Lausanne Switzerland, as a soloist. After enjoying success in Europe, she returned to the United states in 2005 where she joined Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet. After a tremendous amount of growth and learning, Aesha went freelance. She began working with Morphoses, founded by Christopher Wheeldon. Aesha has been featured in Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, to name a few. You will find Aesha featured in the New York City Ballet Workout II, Barbie Nutcracker, and she played the principal dance double for Zoe Saldana in the movie Center Stage.

Aesha is also the founder of an empowering project entitled Swan Dreams, which was inspired by her mission to introduce the magic of ballet to  both underprivileged and minority communities. She is on a mission of introducing and sharing this precious art form to everyone.

The project uses photography to proclaim the message that beautiful art and boundless talent can be found in all environments. Aesha uses city neighborhoods from the New York community where she was raised as the backdrop for her artistic project, which expresses her desire to see this art form reborn in the urban neighborhoods.

Her goal is to encourage young women of color to NEVER STOP DREAMING!

Check out more gorgeous and empowering images of Aesha Ash as she tells her story.
