Tuesday Open Thread: The richest black communities in the U.S.

November 22, 2016 by Miranda 172 Comments

Mitchellville is a upper-middle-class African-American community in  Prince Georges County, Maryland. The average family income of this town is $118,022.   Residents of Mitchellville take tremendous pride in their friendly community and beautiful homes.

It offers its population access to excellent public schools, which boast high test performance and a graduation rate of more than 80 percent. Most students go on to pursue college degrees, and have easy access to  nearby institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University,  the U.S. Naval Academy. Howard University and the University of Maryland-College Park.

Mitchellville was named for John Mitchell (1788–1862), who owned Essington Hall, the plantation that encompassed much of the area. He and his wife Mary Lanham are buried in the Mitchell Family Cemetery on Mitchellville and Mount Oak Road. This location is now South Bowie. An 1878 G.M. Hopkins Atlas shows “Mitchellville P.O.” near the same corner of what is today Mitchellville and Mount Oak Road.

One of the most beautiful venues in Prince George’s County, Newton White Mansion is located in an exquisitely picturesque setting in Mitchellville, Maryland. The Neo-Georgian-style brick mansion sits on 586 acres of lush green land that includes Enterprise Golf Course.

The mansion features finely appointed architectural details, wood floors, and crystal chandeliers. The spacious interior includes 6 large rooms and a contemporary glass-enclosed atrium that overlooks the golf course. The oval-shaped atrium features a central skylight and has 3,000 square feet of floor space which can accommodate 200+ people seated and 300 people mingling throughout the entire mansion. Views of the surrounding golf course and gardens from within the atrium are spectacular.

    Happy Birthday, Mama Alma.

Coco should be able to make easy work of Lois, if she doesn't get in her own way.
