Wednesday Open Thread: Game Changers – Elite Black Quarterbacks

February 19, 2014 by Miranda 161 Comments

Cam Newton took his game to a new level in 2013, establishing career bests with 24 touchdown passes, a 61.7-percent completion rate and a quarterback rating of 88.8. He also became the only player in NFL history to have 50 of more touchdown passes (64) and 25 or more rushing touchdowns (28) in any three-year span. It just happened to be his first three years.

For all the numbers, the most impressive one was Carolina’s 12-4 record. Newton and the Panthers won six games his rookie year and seven his second year before becoming a playoff team in 2013. During the breakout season, Newton led four game-winning drives – twice as many as he directed his first two seasons.

In his rookie year, Newton broke numerous rookie and all-time NFL records for passing and running the ball. He became the first rookie quarterback to throw for 400 yards in his first game, shattering Peyton Manning’s record by 120 yards. He also broke Otto Graham’s 61-year-old record for passing yards by any quarterback in an NFL debut.

Newton would go on to become the first rookie quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season, as well as the first rookie QB to rush for 700 yards. He also ran for 14 touchdowns, buy viagra manhattan more in a single season than any quarterback in NFL history.

In 2010, Cam Newton became Auburn’s third Heisman Trophy winner he was named the recipient of the 76th Heisman Trophy.  Newton led Auburn to an undefeated season and its first national championship since 1957. Cam won in a landslide, finishing with 729 of a possible 886 first-place votes and 2,263 total points to out-distance runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford (1,079 points), by 1,184 points.

On April 28, 2011, Newton was selected with the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He was the first reigning Heisman Trophy winner to go first overall since Carson Palmer in 2003.

Cam has proven to be a great leader in his short time playing big-time football. At Auburn, his teammates felt they couldn’t lose when Cam had the ball. His Carolina teammates have developed the same type of faith in him. Don’t be surpised to see Cam hoist the Lombardi trophy some day.

Charlotte-based Belk, Inc., the nation’s largest privately run mainline department store, has partnered with Newton to launch an exclusive line of men’s apparel. This exclusive collection, MADE Cam Newton,  offers fashion-forward, versatile, professional apparel options for men, and in fall 2013,  also included accessories and shoes.
