Today isn’t just the day for President Obama’s second inaugural address — it’s also the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday.
In formally declaring the holiday, President Obama said in a Friday proclamation that the nation should “celebrate a man whose clarion call stirred our Nation to bridge our differences, and whose legacy still drives us to bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.”
President Obama also said that “the march of progress has brought us closer than ever to achieving Dr. King’s dream, but our work is not yet done,” and he cited the challenges of violence, education, and health care.
The president also encouraged Americans to honor King’s memory by participating in a National Day of Service on Saturday.
Yesterday, President Barack Obama took the oath of office in an intimate White House ceremony, a swearing-in ritual he will repeat today before a massive crowd at the Capitol.
