Good Morning POU!
Still on a high from “The Wiz”! (if you have Xfinity, its On Demand right now, already watched it 3 times). So today, let’s relish in clips from past Tony Award winning shows featuring black casts and/or black leads.
“I’ve Got Love” from Purlie, singer Melba Moore
“Mean To Me” from Ain’t Misbehavin, singer Nell Carter
“Happy Talk” from South Pacific, singer Juanita Hall. Juanita Hall was the first African-American to win a Tony Award, in 1958 for the role of Bloody Mary in South Pacific. This clip is from the film and although for the movie, her voice was dubbed over with another singer’s vocals, this clip features Juanita’s original vocals.
“It Don’t Mean A Thing” from Sophisticated Ladies, singer Phyllis Hyman. Hinton Battle seen in the clip as the solo tap dancer, was the first African American to win 3 Tony’s. For his roles in Sophisticated Ladies, The Tap Dance Kid and Miss Saigon.
Couldn’t leave this out even if I tried (wow, look at Loretta Devine!)
