 “I was in Zurich the other day at a store, whose name I will not mention. Now, I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear, but obviously, the Oprah Winfrey Show isn’t shown in Zurich. So I’m there for Tina Turner’s wedding and I decided I was going to leave the hotel, just me by myself. Stedman wasn’t there and Gayle wasn’t there, no friends. I go into a store and I say to the woman, ‘Uh, excuse me, may I see that bag right over there above your head?’ and she says to me, ‘No, it’s too expensive.’ I said, ‘No, no, no, the black one, up there, it’s folded over,’ and she said, ‘No, you don’t want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one costs too much money.’ I said, ‘No, I really did want to see that one,’ and she refused to get it. She started to show me these other little bags. I tried one more time and said, ‘I really do want to see that bag,’ and she said, ‘Oh, I don’t want to hurt your feelings,’ and I said, ‘Okay, thank you so much, you’re probably right. I can’t afford it,’ and I walked out of the store.” No why did she do that? Now I could’ve had a big blow up and thrown down the Black Card, but it just shows you that it [racism] still exists.”

From Mississippi to the Ivy Leagues

Travis Reginal and Justin Porter of Jackson, Mississippi, have accomplished something extraordinary by any measure: they were accepted into Ivy League universities. Reginal wrapped up his freshman year at Yale in May; Porter did the same at Harvard. But in parallel pieces for The New York Times Sunday, the two young men wrote about why their success is stained with feelings of guilt.

“We jump over these hoops in high school. We take the required classes. We take the standardized tests. And they kind of put us on a trajectory,” said Porter on The Last WordMonday. “My entire question, what I was grappling with was, was my trajectory going in a direction that was opposite of that of the people who I love and have been around for my entire life?”

We lost the great George Duke. RIP.
