Good morning Obots!
Today’s black celebrity-owned restaurant is Gladys and Ron’s Chicken and Waffles based in Atlanta.
In 1996, Gladys Knight partnered with a fellow vocalist Ron Winans to open “Gladys Knight and Ron Winan’s Chicken & Waffles” in Atlanta.
Ms. Knight has said she got the inspiration from Wells Supper Club, a Harlem eatery where she and other famous musicians stopped at when they toured through New York City. Wells Supper Club pioneered the dish when they opened in 1938 as a compromise for jazz musicians and other entertainers whose late-night performances meant they missed dinner, but arrived too early for breakfast.
Ms. Knight’s son, Shanga, developed the concept for the restaurant. Shanga’s connection to the restaurant industry started very early when his father introduced him to working in a butcher shop in Detroit, Michigan. The family also had a restaurant for a period of time and learned the pitfalls of owning a restaurant.
