Good morning Pragmatic Obots.
Today’s Judge is Joseph A. Greenaway.
On June 19, 2009, President Obama nominated Judge Greenaway to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit (Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania). The United States Senate confirmed Greenaway to the Third Circuit on February 9, 2010 in an 84-0 vote. This ended a four year vacancy created by then-judge Samuel A. Alito’s elevation to the United States Supreme Court.
Judge Greenaway was born of West Indian parents in London and moved to New York at age two, where he grew up in Harlem and the Northeast Bronx. His father is a carpenter; his mother a nurse. He, his sister, and his wife all are attorneys.
Judge Greenaway never thought of pursuing any career other than law. His parents were, and remain, the strongest influences in his life. They helped him in establishing his value system, moral code and work ethic. More importantly, they were the guiding force in his strong involvement in and dedication to the church. Aside from his parents, Judge Greenaway believes that the life story of Justice Thurgood Marshall was the most significant influence in his decision to become a lawyer. Justice Marshall’s experiences taught him that “anything could be achieved https://www.glenerinpharmacy.com/buy-viagra-online/ through hard work despite obstacles.”
Judge Greenaway began his professional career as Law Clerk to the Honorable Vincent L. Broderick, United States District Judge, Southern District of New York (1982-1983). Upon completion of his clerkship, he became a litigation associate at the New York firm of Kramer, Levin, Nessen, Kamin & Frankel (1981-1985). His interest in public service beckoned, and he became an Assistant United States Attorney in Newark, New Jersey in 1985, beginning in the Criminal Division (1985-1989), with responsibilities including prosecuting 14 cases; as well as bank fraud and white-collar crime investigations.
On the unanimous recommendation of New Jersey U.S. Senators Bill Bradley and Frank Lautenberg, Greenaway was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey on November 27, 1995. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 16, 1996.
Judge Greenaway has received numerous awards recognizing his judicial excellence, including the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Award of Excellence, the Columbia College John Jay Award, and the Columbia University Medal of Excellence, among others.
Judge Greenaway is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He is married to Veronica Blake-Greenaway and has a son, Joseph, and a daughter, Samantha.
