Morning POU! You’d think if a person got slapped upside the head wearing a helmet, it would hurt the person doing the slapping….and then there’s Deacon Jones.
Deacon Jones rule
Jones was the innovator of the “head slap,” which is exactly what it sounds like. One offensive player tried to thwart Jones by sharpening the buckles on his helmet, which only seemed to motivate Jones.
Jones is credited with coining the term “sack.” But also, many remember Jones for the head slap, easily the most devastating defensive maneuver in professional football this side of the clothesline. Jones would take a step, slap the offensive lineman’s helmet with his forearm or perhaps with both hands. But finally, the league stepped in and banned the practice in 1977.
